As I was making the Mexican bean salad for the shower the other day, I thought about how easy single servings would be for party guests to take things from the buffet back to the table. Chalkboard mason jar lids seemed like the perfect option to make this idea work.
They would also be great to just put at place settings too!
Now, you already know that, for the shower, I used the little individual plastic containers because my store was out of jars
BUT, my store finally got some more jars in and I scooped them up with the intention of making them party ready. I wanted to make the lids chalkboard so that I could re-use them for each party. If I could write what was in the jar on the top, I didn’t need a food tag! I grabbed my trusty chalkboard paint and a foam brush
My little lids took 4 coats of paint to get them nicely covered. I alternated the direction of the paint with each coat {i.e. first coat horizontal, second coat vertical…repeat} to keep brush strokes from showing and to give it a nice subtle pattern.
Once it was dry, I let it sit out overnight to make sure the paint was good and cured. Then, I rubbed the entire thing with chalk to “prime” it.
Onto the bean salad jar the lid goes and then, I used my chalk ink marker to write on the top. They are awesome and I absolutely love them. Plus, they come in lots of colors so I don’t have to be stuck with white.
Now I am on the hunt for a plastic version of the jar {cute shape is a must!} so I might be able to use something like this for the kids’ upcoming birthday parties. Please let me know if you’ve seen something that might work!

I’m so doing this. I have a drawer full of old mayo lids that fit my Mason jars. They are crying for a coat – or four – of chalkboard paint!
