Christmas is my absolutely favorite time of year. From mid-September, I start dreaming of my Christmas decorations and start to think about what this year’s Advent Calendar will look like. Last year, our Advent Calendar was a frame with little envelopes for each day. I wanted to do something a little different this year and, after a brainstorming session with Mathlete, we came with the idea of a Christmas tree Advent Calendar.
We took a trip the hardware store and picked up a few pieces of wood. We had them cut the wood there to make it less messy at home. The largest width is 36″ and then it tapers in to 6″ at the top. A single board runs down the middle to hold all of the pieces together.
I had Mathlete sand it down for me outside so I could paint it. {this is pre-sanded}
Once it was all painted, Mathlete pre-drilled little holes for us to twist the gold hooks into.
We hung the tree on the wall. Then, I wrote the days of month on a mixture of red and gold ornaments to hang on the Advent Calendar.
We made extra little ring hooks so we could more easily get the ornaments on and off of the gold hooks on the calendar. Mathlete used some of my small gold wire and wrapped it around a pen. Then, he cut it with wire cutters to make the little hooks that we perfect for ornaments.
I love how it looks hanging on the wall and can’t wait until December 1st so we can start using it. We’ll just turn the ornaments around to the solid side once the day passes.
My kids are so excited about getting to start counting down. I think they might try to start early and just turn the ornaments around more than once.
Do you make an Advent Calendar each year? If so, how do you count down towards Christmas?

I love your advent calendar! When the kids were small we used to have an advent calendar but now that they are grown we no longer have one although we still do light our advent candles every day during the Christmas season.

Add little slips of paper into each ornament that tell the kids where to look for a gift that you’ve hidden in the house… they get to look for and enjoy a little gift each day.
