Get ready for Valentine’s Day by making these amazing Red Velvet Donuts for your sweetie! These baked donuts are the perfect combination of cream cheese and red velvet!
You know what happens when you have 12+ adults and just as many kids over to your house on a Sunday evening? You sort of forget to confirm that everything for your Monday blog post is in order. So, that is why this lovely post is coming to you so much later than usual. We’ll call it the Super Bowl effect.
I am beyond excited to share these Red Velvet Donuts with you though. As I mentioned, red velvet is my favorite so making Red Velvet Donuts just seems like an obvious recipe for me.
What is red velvet? I think people sometimes get confused with what red velvet actually is. Red velvet cake typically will always have buttermilk or vinegar, and baking soda, which when combined together creates a nice fluffy velvety textured cake. Once you add the red food coloring and cream cheese icing on top you get a classic red velvet recipe!
As you all know I am obsessed with my donut pans. My mom has been visiting for a little while so I took the opportunity to bake up some delicious donuts while she was here and started with these. {I am working on making the peppermint mocha and eggnog ones before she leaves.}
In my opinion I think these are the perfect combination of delicious red velvet and perfectly sweetened cream cheese icing. If you are trying to decide on a Valentine’s Day brunch item, this is your winner! I even let H loose with some sprinkles for some of them too! She had a great time adding them.
What are your plans for Valentine’s Day? Have you tried making homemade donuts yet?

Essential items for this recipe:
- Donut pan
- Mixing bowls
- Wire cooling rack
- 1 cup Flour
- 1/2 tsp Baking Powder
- 2 tbsp Cocoa Powder
- 1/3 cup Sugar
- 1/2 tsp Baking Soda
- 1 large Egg
- 1/2 cup Buttermilk + 2 tbsp
- 2 tbsp Butter melted
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
- 3/4 tbsp Red Food Coloring
- 1/4 cup Cream Cheese softened
- 1/2 cup Powdered Sugar
- 3 tbsp Heavy Cream
-
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Lightly spray a donut pan with nonstick cooking spray.
-
In a medium bowl, combine the dry ingredients {flour through baking soda}. Stir gently to combine.
-
In a large bowl, whisk together egg and buttermilk until just combined. Slowly stir in dry ingredients. Mix in melted butter and vanilla. Stir in red food coloring until you get the shade of red you want. 3/4 Tbsp was perfect for me but you can play around with it.
-
Fill donut wells about 2/3 full. Bake in preheated oven for 8 minutes. Let cool in the pan for 2-3 minutes before transferring to wire cooling racks to cool completely.
-
Beat cream cheese until smooth. Stir in sugar and beat until smooth. Slowly add in heavy cream by the tablespoon until you reach the consistency you want. Frost cooled donuts.

Yum! You made them so pretty. I’ve been thinking of buying a couple donut pans to add to my baking collection. For whatever reason I want a lemon donut today. I can’t wait to see how the others turn out.
