Green bean casserole is a staple at pretty much any holiday dinner table. When you are searching for recipes, look no further than this green bean casserole with bacon. It is the best green bean casserole recipe around.
I originally created this easy green casserole in partnership with ALDI whose stores were new to my area. To get an idea of how their prices compared, I did a little double shopping and cooking.
I wanted to compare how ALDI stacked up to the local store I usually shop in, so I did a little comparison when making my green bean casserole. I went to both stores and bought the store brand of all the ingredients I needed to make my recipe, including the made from scratch cream of mushroom soup. Here was the result.
How to Make Green Bean Casserole
Green bean casserole is so easy to make. It is as simple as combining the ingredients into a bowl and then transferring to a baking dish. Add the remaining toppings and then bake it in the oven.
Some green bean casserole recipes use canned cream of mushroom soup. I like to use homemade cream of mushroom soup instead but definitely is not a requirement. Using the canned soup makes the casserole easier and faster.
I’m from a lot farther south than I live now and we always referred to it string bean casserole. It is exactly the same thing but just with a different name.
The thing that makes this the best green casserole is the addition of sour cream and bacon to the recipe. I think it adds such great flavor and texture to a holiday classic. This green bean casserole with bacon always gets rave reviews whenever I make it.
When making string bean casserole, I typically recommend using fresh green beans. However, you can easily substitute canned or frozen if you prefer. It will impact the cooking time though so keep that in mind when planning your Thanksgiving menu.

- 4 cups fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into 2 inch pieces
- 3 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 3 Tbsp milk
- 1 1/4 cup cream of mushroom soup
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp pepper
- 1 1/2 cup French fried onions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a medium baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.

Bring a large pot of water to boil over high heat. Add green beans and cook for 2 minutes. Immediately transfer to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process. Drain and pat dry with paper towels.

In a large bowl, combine cream of sour cream, milk, cream of mushroom soup, salt and pepper. Stir well to combine. Stir in green beans and 2/3 cup onions. Transfer to prepared baking dish. Top with crumbled bacon and remaining fried onions.

Bake for 10-15 minutes in preheated oven or until bubbly. Remove from oven and serve.
