During the holiday season, we do a ton of entertaining. Each year, we host a huge Christmas party where all our friends and some family members get to spend time together during the busy holiday season. Of course, as with most parties, the food is a major piece of the party and I like to go all out with lots of different delicious items on the food table that capture all our varied food preferences. One of my favorites this year is an Asian-inspired recipe: wasabi ginger soy tuna crisps.
These wasabi ginger soy tuna crisps are inspired by a delicious appetizer recipes Mathlete and I had during our recent trip to California. They were so amazing that I knew I needed to come home and figure out a way to make them for our annual Christmas party. Of course, I made sure to get the #1 Asian brand when buying my ingredients. Kikkoman Soy Sauce is traditionally brewed from water, wheat, soybeans and salt. Then, it is aged several months to develop its characteristic rich, yet mellow flavor that brings out the “umami” taste making it perfect for Asian recipes. Kikkoman also offers a Less Sodium Soy Sauce which is perfect for home cooks looking to cut down on sodium levels without sacrificing flavor.
Ingredients for Wasabi Ginger Soy Tuna Crisps:
2 lbs fresh tuna steak
2 tsp fresh, grated ginger
3/4 cup Kikkoman Soy Sauce
2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1 Tbsp Kikkoman Sesame Oil
2 serrano peppers, thinly sliced
1/4 cup Kikkoman Wasabi Sauce
Wonton Crisps:
20 wonton wrappers
1 Tbsp Kikkoman Sesame Oil
2 tsp cornstarch
2 Tbsp sesame seeds
Let’s Make It:
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. In a small bowl, whisk together 1 Tbsp sesame oil and 2 tsp cornstarch. Cut wonton wrappers in half and place on rimmed baking sheet. Brush on oil mixture and then sprinkle wonton wrappers with sesame seeds. Bake in oven for 5 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool.
3. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine 1/2 cup Kikkoman soy sauce with ginger. Place tuna steaks in soy sauce mixture and marinate for 10 minutes. Remove tuna from marinade and discard marinade. Season tuna steaks with salt and pepper.
4. Heat remaining 1 Tbsp oil over medium heat in skillet. Add tuna steaks and sear on all sides. Remove from pan and transfer to cutting board. Thinly slice tuna and brush with remaining soy sauce.
5. Place tuna slices on wonton crisps. Top with Kikkoman Wasabi Sauce and sliced serrano peppers.
Note: These little appetizers are perfect for holiday parties and packed with flavor. You can easily make the wonton crisps ahead of time too and then assemble everything just before the party!
When shopping, just be sure to pick up Kikkoman Traditionally Brewed Soy Sauce for the perfect flavor enhancement of the fresh tuna. You can also find great recipe ideas on the Kikkoman home cooks page or connect with them on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram.
