I love trying new foods. I grew up in a really small town where the local Chinese joint was considered “exotic.” When I moved into a larger city with access to all kinds of cuisine, I really embraced them all and spent quite a bit of time trying all the different restaurants. One that I hadn’t had before and really wanted to try before was Malaysian cuisine. I couldn’t find a local restaurant to try easily so I thought I would attempt to make a dish at home inspired by the flavors of Malaysia. These Malaysian Chicken Meatballs were the result of some experimenting and I absolutely love how they came out.
Malaysian food is an amazing combination of Malay, Chinese, and Indian food traditions, with Indonesian, Thai, Portuguese and Middle Eastern influences. I really love the traditional flavors like curry, lemongrass, ginger and tumeric found in so many Malaysian dishes. Of course, added extras like Lingham’s Hot Sauce from Malaysia Kitchen for the World help to make homemade dishes even better.
Ingredients for Malaysian Chicken Meatballs:
3 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 inch fresh tumeric
1 tsp curry powder
3 Tbsp Lingham’s Hot Sauce
5 bird’s eye chilies
1 onion
1 Tbsp peeled, grated ginger
2 stalks lemongrass
2 lbs ground chicken
1 egg
cilantro and grated onion for garnish
Let’s Make It:
1) In a food processor, combine garlic through lemongrass. Process until smooth.
2) In a large bowl, combine ground chicken, 3/4 of sauce mixture and egg. Mix until well combined. Scoop into meatballs and place on baking sheet lined with foil.
3) Bake meatballs at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until cooked through. Remove from oven and drizzle with remaining sauce mixture from step one. Garnish with chopped cilantro and grated onion.
These meatballs are absolutely amazing. I love the all of the heat and flavor that comes from the unique combination of ingredients.
The flavors of Malaysia have been rated the number three top-trending flavors by the National Restuarant Association so there is no better time to try finding a local restuarant to try the cuisine or even trying your hand at making some recipes at home.
