I was bored on one of my recent sick days {there have been way too many of them in my personal opinion} and was scouring Craigslist. As I clicked from page to page I saw: Cabbot Wren Chippendale Chair (!). Amazingly, when I emailed her, the chair was still available. As if the chair was meant for me, she was headed out of town until the end of the weekend so I had time to actually get well before needing to pick it up!
I got the chair home and started deconstructing it so I could begin the furniture upcycle process {you know…paint, fabric, etc.}. I started by removing the fabric from the back so I could get to the seat cushion.
After what seemed like a million staples, the fabric was finally off! When I tried to unscrew the chair cushion, I realized something wasn’t quite right. After a lot of work, I got the cushion off and found this
Yep, someone had glued the top on versus putting the screws back in! It made me sad but wasn’t a big deal. I went on with covering the seat with my new fabric.
Then, it was time to paint.
I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in pure white. It took two coats since the original wood was pretty dark. Then, I used the clear wax on top. Here it is before I secured the fabric underneath again.
And all done and ready for prime time
Have you done any furniture upcycles recently? It can be really addicting once you get started 🙂

Love your project. Was checking out that same fabric in blue for my porch chairs. Think the yellow may be a better choice:) Visiting from Somewhat Simple.
Have a great weekend, Jen

Stunning! Love that yellow fabric. I’m a sucker for bold geometric patterns like that. I only just tried out chalk paint for the first time last weekend and am now totally addicted. Great job on this.
Shannah says
Isn’t chalk paint totally addicting?! It is just so fun to work with and the lack of prepping for paint makes it a breeze to start projects.
Kris says
You did a great job! I love the fabric you chose and the white really shows off the lines of the chair.
You took it from drab to fab! 🙂
Shannah says
Thanks! The yellow was just so cheery…I couldn’t resist.

Hi! I found this post through Pinterest. I’m currently in the midst of a dining room set re-do, so I wanted some motivation! It seems to be taking FOREVER to paint my chairs. Maybe I’m a bit of a perfectionist, but wow, this is time consuming (not to say that it won’t be worth it — I know it will!) It’s my first big makeover project though. Once I have a few under my belt, will it be a quicker process? How long does it typically take you from start to finish for this type of project? 🙂
Shannah says
It definitely took me awhile to finish the chairs. The first one took longer than my second but they bot still took a long time because of all the detail.
