Pumpkin desserts are everywhere once fall starts. Try this chocolate pumpkin dump cake and I guarantee it will be at the top of your list of pumpkin dessert recipes.
Who doesn’t love delicious pumpkin desserts during the fall and winter months? I know I do. This chocolate pumpkin dump cake recipe is so simple that you will want to make it over and over again. {Think Thanksgiving dessert the easy way!}
What is a dump cake?
A dump cake is super simple dessert that is usually some combination of cake mix and fruit. (Fruit cocktail dump cake is crazy popular around here). The term “dump” comes because you can usually just dump it into the baking dish and give it a mix before baking.
This pumpkin dump cake recipe combines all the best fall flavors to create one of the best pumpkin desserts ever. Since the pumpkin goes into the cake first and the cake mix goes on top, the pumpkin layer definitely resembles more of a pumpkin pudding than a cake.
As with all the best desserts, this pumpkin dump cake recipe tastes even more amazing when you top your slice with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a little caramel sauce.
I add both pecans and chocolate chips to this pumpkin dump cake recipe but you could do both, either or none. Dark chocolate works best in the recipe but, if you prefer a lighter chocolate, you could use semi-sweet.
Some other great ways to alter this pumpkin dump cake recipe with great success:
- Swap the pecans for roasted walnuts
- Use a spice cake mix in place of the vanilla cake mix
- Top the finished cake with butter pecan ice
- Top the finished cake with salted caramel sauce

Notes
- Spice cake is a great substitute for yellow cake mix.
- You can mix the pumpkin through oats in a bowl and then transfer to baking dish if preferred. It is easier to mix using a bowl versus the baking dish.
