Plans for the basement renovation (i.e. turning it from an unfinished storage area to a finished space) are well under way.  After we had the floor plan all mapped out, we started talking about other details of finishing the space.  One of the big questions:  how much insulation do we need?

Of course, since our space is mostly underground, we need to add some kind of insulation to serve as a protector such as a thermal block.  We planned to have insulation installed in the walls but weren’t completely decided on whether we would need to add it to the ceiling area as well.

One day, I was down working on some crafts and that question was easily answered for me.  Our daughter, H, was upstairs playing in the kitchen.  Playing around here usually involves a lot of singing and dancing (she is 4 after all).  It was amazing because it sounded like she was right next to me! I pretty much ran upstairs and told Mathlete that we needed to find some way to deaden the sound down there…especially if he planned to have his “movie room”.

The obvious answer to our problem, since we don’t need to completely sound proof the area, is to add insulation into the ceiling.  This will also help the heating and cooling of both levels.  So, we added insulation into the ceiling into our plans.  Two birds…one stone!
