We talk a lot about food here at Just Us Four.  With recipes featured on What to Cook to Wednesday and the Pinworthy Projects party each week, it can be easy to forget that food doesn’t come easily to so many people within America.  In fact, did you know that more than 50 million people in America alone suffer from a lack of food?  Yeah, that figure is staggering!  The biggest factor:  unemployment.

Sure, we all know that unemployment is a big problem right now.  Our economy isn’t as strong as it once was and people are not able to find jobs like they were before.  It is pretty easy to forget the trickle down effect that has on so many other things like food and shelter.  

During Spring, food shelters and other places that provide for the hungry traditionally experience a major reduction in donations.   To help bridge this gap, Wal-Mart Is working with Feeding America and four major food brands that I’m sure you’ll recognize {ConAgra, General Mills, Kraft and Kellogg’s} in a nationwise Fighting Hunger Together initiative.  This HUGE initiative starts on Monday, April 9th and runs through April 30th.
 

Ok, so what does this all mean for you and me? 

 

How can WE help?

The first thing you can do is Vote to fight spring hunger with Walmart. 
Between April 9th and April 30th, Walmart will be hosting a Facebook campaign where fans can rally support communities in need of hunger relief.  You can vote for any of the 200 communities with the highest unemployment rates as determined by the Department of Labor.  They are all listed right here for you. 

Then, Walmart will donate a total of $2 million to the 21 communities receiving the most support: $1 million to the winner and $50,000 each to the 20 runners-up.  That is approximately 43 million meals for families in need!  Families from places like Detroit {where we have friends} or even right here in my home state of Virginia.

The next thing you can do is SHOP!
isit Wal-Mart stores during the initiative and looks for in-store signage noting what products will help contribute.  By purchasing select products from ConAgra, General Mills, Kraft and Kellogg’s, you can donate meals to Feeding America or Action for Healthy Kids.
