I hope everyone enjoys a wonderful holiday with their family and friends! Just Us Four is taking a break until January 2nd but, then, I look forward to sharing all new and exciting projects and recipes!
Let’s Go on a Sleigh Ride
This post was originally shared over on Salt Tree but I wanted to share it with you here as well!
For my kitchen decorations this year, I focused on bright reds and greens for the decor.
One of the newest additions to the room started with this unfinished wood sled.
I taped stripes with painters tape and painted part of them red.
Once it was dry, I taped off the other stripes and painted them green. Then, I let the entire thing dry for several days before adding my vinyl lettering to the sled.
Are you ready for sleigh rides?
I love this sleigh because, even though it is red and green, I think it can stay out for decoration all winter!
Gift Ideas for the Littles
I’m sure all you prepared parents have your gifts purchased, wrapped and under the tree. So, this post isn’t for you. It is for the parents {like me} who are still out walking the aisles and clicking on the web looking for great gifts for their kids.
Or maybe the aunt or uncle who just has no clue what to get…or the grandparent who isn’t exactly “hip” when it comes to kids’ toys.
I’ll go ahead and caveat this and say, if the kids you are shopping for aren’t {or near} 5 and 2, I’m not going to be of much help. But, if they are, read on for some great gift ideas that are readily available right now!

Glittery Snowflakes
I’m on a big snowflake kick this year. It started with my Snowflake and Mercury Glass mantle and it has been spreading throughout our house like some kind of snowflake epidemic. Blame it on the lack of snow last year and so far this year…
The newest snowy addition to our house are these glittery snowflakes.

Doe a Deer
If you took a look at our Christmas home tour, you’ll notice a common thread through almost every room…let’s see if you can figure out by checking out our Christmas holiday table {or you know…reading the title}.
This year, I set the table using a combination of gold chargers and square and round plates.
In the center of the table is a green runner with an ivory and gold snowflake runner layered over top.
The vase in the middle is filled with little gold sticks, snow and my favorite glittered pinecones.
Gold candles and little reindeer flank the centerpiece on either side.
So, did you figure out what almost all the spaces in the house have in common? {I hope you guessed deer!}
What are you decorating with this year?
Christmas Home Tour
I love coming home to Christmas decorations. There is something about them that just instantly lifts your spirits! Had a bad day at work? No worries, take a look a the sparkly lights on the tree. Let’s go on a Christmas Home Tour.
Each of the rooms in our home have a slightly different “theme” going on but, for the most part, we try to keep them cohesive. I think the one exception would be the kitchen which we keep ultra kid friendly since that is where the kids seem to spend the most time.
As always, H made a gingerbread house with her grandma and it is proudly on display in the kitchen. We put it on the sleigh this year surrounded by Christmas trees.
Just above the that little scene is my super awesome skate {thanks mom!}, another tree and the candle holder I painted at the YHL Book signing and craft class.
You’ve seen my Christmas Mantle so we’ll focus on the little bookcases in the family room instead. The bookcases are new to this room and I didn’t waste any time filling them up with candles, trees and deer!
In the hallway, you’ll find more snowflakes and our advent calendar! The glittery painted snowflakes hang above the advent calendar and give off a little sparkle when the sun hits in the afternoon.
The foyer is more of the ivory, blue and gold found in other rooms of the house. I even switched out the NOEL letters from last year to a blue paper that matches the paper of our Advent mittens.
Thanks for touring our home for Christmas! We were so happy to have you along for the walk thru 🙂
Christmas Decorations – Flashback Style
You are getting very sleepy…you are starting to feel like it is December 2011...
Why?
Because today I’m taking you back and sharing some of the Christmas decorations and crafts from last year!
One of my first projects was a yarn wreath {you should in no way be surprised!}

Hosting a Holiday Party – Tips for Success
Last year, I did a post about how I prep for my annual holiday party. This year, I thought I would share some more of my tips for putting on a holiday party!
Invites
Of course, every party starts with some form of invitation. Just like last year, I went all digital with my invitations using a combination of Evite and Facebook to get the word out. The great thing about these two options is that it does the RSVP counting for you!
Tip:
Be sure to send out your invitation about a month in advance. The holidays book up fast for most people with lots of parties, family get togethers and work functions filling up the weekends.
Kids
Another major piece to planning the party is deciding whether to include kids. Traditionally our parties have been kid free but, this year, we are embracing the fact that 99% of our friends have kids. Paying for a babysitter to visit friends, during such an already expensive time of year, just doesn’t sound great to a lot of couples {waving hand in the air}.
Tip:
Consider making the party kid friendly but hire a few local babysitters to keep an eye on the kids. It gives your friends more time to mingle while keeping the kids under control.
Food
Now, everyone has RSVP’d to your fabulous online invitation. The next obvious thing is food! Food is one of the key ingredients to a great party so plan early and be sure to have lots of variety! Some favorites that make their way onto our menu every year:
Pancetta Crisps with Goat Cheese and Pear
Cranberry Chili Sauce Meatballs
Cheese Straws
We always try to make sure we add some new items too though such as
Bacon Wrapped Potato Bites
Gorgonzola and Honey Leek Tart
Salted Caramel Puddle Cookies
Tip:
Try to keep things bite sized! You’ll have a lot less clean-up and it makes it easier on your guests to mingle and eat.
Organize
Once you set your menu, print out a copy of each recipe you’ll be using and put them in a folder/binder/whatever you choose. Use the recipes to create a master shopping list that stays in the folder too.
Tip:
Separate your shopping into “have” and “need” to account for items you typically keep in your pantry. Having it on the shopping list, though, will be reminder to be sure you actually have enough in your pantry prior to going shopping for supplies.
Prep
I always develop a prep schedule. It typically starts on the day I plan to shop for most of my ingredients and runs all the way to “go” time.

It includes every major step of getting ready for the party and who is responsible for it {Mathlete is always very helpful when it comes to moving tables, getting ice, etc.}
Tip:
Put out all of your serving dishes a few days before and label them with little pieces of paper. This way, everything has a place to go once it is cooked AND you master your table layout in advance.
So, there you have it…the way I get ready for a our annual Christmas party.
Do you host an annual party? Have any party planning tips to share?

Striped Straw Wreath
I’ve been busy crafting for Christmas! One thing I have always wanted to have is a bright, cheery striped straw wreath. So, this year, I decided to make one!

Snowflake and Mercury Glass Christmas Mantel
Christmas decorating is in full force here! We’ve almost completed the outside {one deer left to plug in!} and I worked on the inside over the weekend.
As always, I started with our fireplace mantel in the family room. I love changing this over to a Christmas mantel.
This year, I went with a combination of mercury glass, pine cones and snowflakes. I moved my new mirror onto the mantle and used it as a starting point. Then, I added the pine cone garland.
Mercury glass vases, candle holders and animals were added next. I really love the hive texture on the large vase.
To keep with the natural vibe of the pine cones, I added gilded wood pieces to a small glass vase.
The little clips are actually stocking holders but those haven’t been unpacked quite yet 🙂 The last addition was the little snowflake clings to the mirror for a fun touch.
It is definitely starting to look like Christmas around here!
