Mathlete’s birthday always falls very close to Labor Day. So, to celebrate a day off from work and his birthday, we usually throw a fun Labor Day barbecue with friends and family. It is the perfect way to close out the summer and get in one last day party before the fall weather starts to set in. Of course, no party is complete without delicious food, especially yummy dips, to enjoy while the main meal cooks. Last year, when we visited California wine country, I fell in love with a chicken salad we found at a local market. At the beginning of each spring, I buy a basil plant with the hopes that it will give me enough basil to enjoy throughout the summer. Last year, it died 2 weeks in. This year, it is WAY overproducing so I have a TON of basil. When one has a bunch of basil, it is always best to make some basil walnut pesto with it. Then, combine that delicious basil with a few other ingredients to create a truly mouthwatering pesto hearts of palm grilled cheese.

Our weather has been absolutely picture perfect for the last week. It is so hard to believe that we are entering August because normally that brings 100 degree plus days with tons of humidity. Instead, it has felt almost like spring. The gorgeous weather means we are out grilling and that means you are likely to find ginger soy kabobs on the grill cooking.
